GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs intermediate skilled work operating heavy vehicles with motorized equipment to pick up solid waste; does related work as required.
Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Collecting municipal solid waste; operating vehicles used to transport garbage, trash and recycling material; operating motorized equipment.
Operates rear, side, and front loading refuse truck on an assigned route;
Operates hydraulic mechanisms for dumping and compressing refuse;
Services all type of dumpsters, roll-out-carts, or any other containers used in the solid waste operation;
Delivers or removes containers to commercial and residential properties, and at sites of special events;
Assists collectors when necessary;
Operates grabber truck in the collection of brush, appliances, etc.

Tours city and takes pictures of waste material for billing purposes;
Prepares list of special collection items that need to be collected;
Verifies all container lists and location and account number;
Makes minor maintenance repairs to all containers;
Operates roll-off truck on an assigned route;
Makes pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports malfunctions to supervisor;
Cleans and washes trucks, equipment and containers;
Performs other tasks related to solid waste;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating medium to heavy sized trucks and equipment; thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; skill in the operation of automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to oversee the work of unskilled helpers; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in performance of heavy manual work and in the operation of motorized equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate CDL license valid in the State of Florida.
